I love the redundant closures, the inside is a wide neoprene belly band with ample velcro strips, it feels heavy duty and well made. Then there are two nylon straps with adjustable quick release buckles, as a second line of defense. The strap that goes around the dog's chest has the same arrangement, and it has an extra boutant flap to go under the muzzle, to make sure their head stays above water. Also the floatation material is thicker than on comparable brands costing more than twice as much, that has to translate to additional buoyancy.

I have a Newfie Lab mix who had elbow surgery, and although of course an excellent swimmer, needed a little added buoyancy to prevent straining the joints. I have a swim vest for my old golden retriever that allows him more pool time with less work for his old joints, so I knew this was a good idea. The OH design is great and easy to adjust and fit depending on the shape of the dog. The double straps and velcro underlies belly make it simple to adjust and secure, The neck wrap is well padded and comfortable although the extra chin piece is really unnecessary, and the design provides good balance and bouyancy. The grab handles are big enough to steer him a bit if I need to, and for a small dog I am certain you could easily pull the dog up out of the water. The unit dries quickly and I can fit it onto my dog (who is very patient for it because he knows swimming comes next) in about a minute. Although we have only used it in a pool so far, I am planning a trip to the mountains and I am sure it will be appreciated for lake swimming. It is comfortable enough to for boat trips and just leaving it on for hours.

I have a pug with Pug Myelopathy, which is a congenital stenosis/narrowing of the spinal column (possibly associated with pugs' extra curly tails) which results in progressive loss of strength and coordination in the back legs. I read that water therapy is good to preserve their strength and ability to walk. When I saw this highly rated life vest on special for Prime Day, I immediately ordered it. We have used it once and it fit well and kept our pug stable and level in the water. I especially like the flotation flap under his chin. It did a good job of keeping his face and mouth out of the water.

My 8-year-old cockapoo loves to swim, but she isn't the best swimmer in the world, her little legs hold her back, but now this isn't a problem at all! She loves swimming in this vest. At first, she was pretty hesitant, she actually wouldn't move for a while, then when she tried to, she just fell over. But, after realizing I wasn't taking it off of her, she got used to it and then loved it. She swam the entire day! Also, the handle on top is pretty great! It was very convenient to use to pick her up from the water.

I bought this float coat to support my 11-year-old Golden Retriever. She's 58 lbs and the large was perfect. She is a strong smooth swimmer and had no problem jumping off the boat and maneuvering in the water. We could easily pull her back onto the boat with the top handle. She even dragged us around with the rear handle. The leash attachment does not appear to be reinforced, but it worked fine for getting her to and from the car to the boat. You can see in the photos that the belly support helps keep her high in the water, most of the time her tail was visible. Ruby swam for several hours and didn't mind the coat at all. Be sure to check the straps from time to time to be sure it's neither too loose or too tight.

This is an experienced swimmer life jacket, and is superb at the task. There are three types of buoyancy: positive (floats on the surface of the water) negative (sinks) and neutral (floats just at the water line). This vest brings an animal from negative, to neutral buoyancy. This makes swimming EASIER... not easy.
