Easy To Use: Minimize The Light. A dark room will show the best results. Press the button on the bottom of the device to turn on the infrared LED. Press gently on the skin with your hand move the pressure device and slowly from side to side. Veins will appear as shadows or dark lines on the periphery of red glowing light.

How to Use:

Step 1: Minimize the light, and choosing a dark room will show better results. Press the button on the bottom of the device to turn on the infrared LED.
Step 2: Press gently on the skin with your hand and slowly move the device from side to side. The vein will appear as a shadow or dark line and will appear on the periphery of the red glow around the device. Note: The device must be in contact with the skin when looking for veins. Taking the light out of the skin doesn’t show anything!

Step 3: Once the vein is found (dark shadow/line), reposition the infrared light around the area to obtain significant vein vision. If the vein is more superficial to the surface, it may be necessary to move the light source further because it may be too bright and cover the vein. Follow the vein path so that you have a full visual size and orientation.

This thing works. I've seen negative reviews but took a chance and I'm glad I did. To get the best effect from the light, follow the directions. In a dim room, move the light back and forth across an area your knowledge of anatomy tells you to expect a vein. Veins and arteries show up as dark shadows on the edge of the red glowing area of the light. Once you locate a vein go up and down the vein with the light to check for crooked veins. Anything with a pulse is an artery. Make a mental note of a landmark, or mark the vein with a surgical marker. Not only has it improved my success rate, once I have located the vein I am outwardly more confident and my patients are at ease. They are also impressed by the light itself. I work on a 25 bed med surg floor that gets a ton of direct admits from local nursing homes, very often dehydrated. I'm in a city that is 60% African American. I am dealing with some hard sticks and this light helps.

I am a RN and my unit's vein finder broke, so I thought for the price it was worth a try. So at first I did not like this product and felt it did not work, but I then learned how to use it and had actually been helpful in some blood draws. For those PT's that are "hard sticks" this has actually been helpful in finding a vein for blood draws. Normally it is all about feel, however, some pts that are really obese, edematous, with small veins it is helpful to have a guide to help identify the size, location, and quality of veins. Anyways, the key is to not just put it flush to the skin but to actually press down into the skin.

This is a great product. I do not use this as directed. I prefer to use this on me Pediatric patients, I place on the palmer side of hand and shine through. It is great for those cubby little infants. I have also used to place feet IV as well. At my last Pediatric ER we had a 250£ version of this product. This works much better than the WeeSight.

Love it! Its proved especially useful to me in the pediatric population and couple other difficult IV sticks. I recommend this handy light be added to your tool belt. I'm not saying this will be THE solution to your every hard IV start but your patients as well as the patient parents will definitely appreciate you pulling out all the stops for their comfort. For those users that don't see the benefit of this are probably using it wrong, it has to be pressed against the skin to illuminate the veins. Fair warning about this vein finder, you may need a couple pair of hands to participate aside from your own. 1 person holding the illumivein over the intended vein and the 2nd person to flip on the light switch once you access the vein. I'm an ER nurse, I don't use this often but you run into that 1 out of 1,000 hard sticks and you'll be glad you had this. I think it's a great product for the value.

I have been a pediatric nurse for over 20 years, and this product is great for use on infants and children. I have always used a transilluminator to start difficult IV's. I currently work for an organization that has a very expensive vein finder, which works for adults and teens, not for infants and chubby children. This product is fantastic, I have read the negative reviews, this product is the perfect tool for the "right" job. I would recommend this product to anyone that works with children and infants and has some knowledge on how to use a transilluminator or willing to learn. Yes, you need to turn off the lights, I always use a parent as a light monitor. Been starting IV's in the dark for years.
